Disenfranchised Staten Islanders Declare Intifada

Demand That New Yorkers Leave Occupied Territory

12/3/02 - Tired of being subject to the humiliating oppression of Mike Bloomberg and New York City, Staten Island has demanded that New York cops and administrators pull out of the territory and allow Staten Island to establish its own government - whoever that might include.

When asked whether these threats of secession are to be taken seriously, Bloomberg replied, "Staten Island? I'm not sure what you mean. You mean Long Island?"

How many nations in Europe?

Source: How many nations in Europe? via European Tribune
Globalisation and trading blocs like the European Union have made the cost of being a micro-state cheaper. It is likely that the nation-state as we know it now will decentralise further unless protectionist economic borders or inter-state violence on a global scale occurs.

Flashpoint Quebec

Cover Image

Overview

A NATO request for military assistance to Canada thrusts a U.S. Army 10th Mountain light infantry task force behind Quebec provincial lines on a moment's notice. Mission objective: take the airport and bridges and then allow the Canadian Army to pass through their positions. It was supposed to be a permissive spearhead insertion into the St. Lawrence port city of Trois Rivieres, aimed at bringing the breakaway province of Quebec back to negotiations in resolving its claim of secession from Canada. Instead, the American infantry unit is drawn into a violent urban battle with a column of main battle tanks from the revolutionary Quebec Defense Force, a force that is clandestinely supported by France. Follow the soldiers on both sides of the conflict as they battle not only each other, but also deadly setbacks, hasty decisions, and emotional challenges all in the literal fog of this action-packed, street-to-street, combat thriller.

THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS

PREAMBLE

Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,

Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,

Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law,

Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations,

Whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,

Whereas Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in co-operation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms,

Whereas a common understanding of these rights and freedoms is of the greatest importance for the full realization of this pledge,

Now, Therefore THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY proclaims THIS UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction.

Australia; Mini-states Down Under are sure they can secede

By Nick Squires in Sydney 12:01AM GMT 24 Feb 2005
You won't find them on any map but, in the minds of their creators at least, they are as real as Brisbane or Bondi Beach.
As Australia wrestles with the issue of whether to become a republic, it faces a constitutional challenge of its own as a growing number of mini-states declare their "independence".
The trend started in 1970 when a West Australian farmer, Leonard Casley, announced his property's secession as a protest over grain quotas, proclaiming himself Prince Leonard of Hutt River Province.
Prince Leonard and his wife, Princess Shirley, continue to run their tiny principality, issuing passports and welcoming thousands of tourists a year.
Australia boasts about 20 "nations", each undeterred by the fact that their existence has no legal foundation. Some are motivated by ideology, others by a grudge against the local council or a reluctance to pay taxes.

North Queensland wants secession

Secession in Australia, besides that of Western Australia? It seems unlikely, but there you go. A few days ago the issue of North Queensland seeking independence from the rest of the state was on the front page of the Courier Mail.

According to Bob Katter, North Queensland must become a separate state to save the region from economic ruin.

South Sudan Timeline 1956-2011

A referendum took place in Southern Sudan from 9 to 15 January 2011,[1] on whether the region should remain a part of Sudan or become independent.[2][3] The referendum was one of the consequences of the 2005 Naivasha Agreement between the Khartoum central government and the Sudan People's Liberation Army/Movement (SPLA/M).

A simultaneous referendum was supposed to be held in Abyei on whether to become part of Southern Sudan but it has been postponed due to conflict over demarcation and residency rights.[4]

On 7 February 2011, the referendum commission published the final results, with 98.83% voting in favour of independence.[5] While the ballots are going to be suspended in 10 of the 79 counties for exceeding 100% of the voter turnout, the number of votes are still well over the requirement of 60% turnout, and the majority vote for secession is not in question. Texas Secessionists to Obama: Israel With 1967 Borders? We Want Texas With 1845 Borders

President Obama's call for Israel to revert to its 1967 borders has caught the attention of one of the most forward-thinking, sophisticated political thinkers of our state, Daniel Miller, the president of the Texas Nationalist Movement.

He has dashed off a letter to Obama saying, in essence, you think those Israel borders a good idea? Then get Texas back to its 1845 borders.

"It seems that you and your people have a desire to allow people the right of self-determination and return things to "the way they were," says Miller, apparently a big Barbra Streisand fan.

He calls for three things:

1. Return the United States to its pre-1845 border with Texas.

2. Recognize Texas as an independent and sovereign nation.

3. Take no actions of retribution and support our success wholeheartedly.

He -- ha ha! --adds a p.s." "Let's not call it secession. We can play off the 'Arab Spring' you supported and call it 'Texas Summer.' Has a nice ring, doesn't it?"

No comment yet from the White House. Or Rick Perry's office, for that matter.

Creating a real micronation

The purpose of this wiki is to gather information on the concept of creating micronations. Unlike many other resources, the emphasis is here on serious thinking about the matter. Whether you try to achieve actual independence by building a new nation, or it is a purely intellectual exercise, you are welcome to add your thoughts. If you have doubts about this kind of projects, that is fine. Sharpen your wit, and think about how the problems can be overcome. Where others ask "What?" or "Why?", this page is the "How to?".

If you look for websites that are similarly serious in thought, but more active, there are none few… the best one is surely Seasteading.org. Very recommended. As for this page, well, it is on a vacation of sorts.

Ladonia

Size: .386 of a square mile
In 1980, Swedish artist Lars Vilks built a series of wood and stone sculptures on the beach of the Kullaberg nature preserve in Skane, Sweden. The artworks, which look like strange whimsical castles, eventually became a popular tourist attraction. They also drew the ire of the local city council, which decreed that Vilks had illegally built a “house” in a nature preserve and demanded the pieces be removed. Not willing to see his art destroyed, Vilks did what any reasonable person would do: he declared the stretch of beach to be an independent, sovereign nation free from the laws and rules of the Swedish government. Vilks named his new country the Kingdom of Ladonia, and quickly came up with a flag and a manifesto that said that his nation’s only tax policy was that citizens should “give away their creativity.”

By the 2000s, Vicks’s country had built up an unofficial population of 14,000—unofficial because none of them actually lived there—made up mostly of fellow artists and other supporters of his cause. It also claimed to have a currency (called the Ortug) and a national language (phrased Latin), and there was even a set series of social classes. Still, even today the fledgling country has yet to impress Sweden, which has never recognized it as a legitimate nation.

The Principality of Outer Baldonia

Founded: 1948
Status: Defunct
Location: Outer Bald Tusket Island, Canada
Population: Varied
The Principality of Outer Baldonia is a now defunct micronation whose territorial pretensions comprised the roughly 4 acres of Outer Bald Tusket Island 15 km off the southern tip of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. Founded in 1948 by Russell Arundel, who was an American business man and lobbyist for Pepsi Cola Company and entitled the “Prince of Princes” of Outer Baldonia, the Principality is often classed as a ‘whimsy state’. Endowed with a charter, flag, and organized military, it was one of the more developed, and highly populated of the various historical micronations. Apparently, Arundel stumbled upon the island while fishing recreationally for tuna.
While there are reports that the island was used as a base for fishing (possibly seasonally), and was also used as a sheep pasture, Arundel negotiated its purchase for $750, and constructed a stone edifice for himself and his friends to use as a fishing lodge during the sport fishing season. Legend has it that it was, in fact, while Arundel and his friends were engaged in an episode of rum drinking, that they conceived, wrote, approved and published the Declaration of Independence of Outer Baldonia. Reflecting the primacy of sport fishers such as Arundel in its leadership, the trappings of the state seem to have teamed with aquatic life. The currency, for example, was called the Tunar.

New cities take hits as Jurupa Valley incorporates

What city would become the capital of the new state of South California?
How would the state pay for its operations?
Or what about a water supply for the 13 million South California residents?
Riverside County Supervisor Jeff Stone, who proposed that at least 13 counties secede from California, said Friday he doesn't have those answers yet.
His first task is to gauge interest from other local elected officials and residents.
